No Exaggerated Claims - Opening Keynote

Many speakers and authors make a variety of claims, some substantiated, some not. Even in the absence of any intention to deceive, it’s easy for speakers and authors to fall into the trap of making exaggerated claims when seeking to attract new clients.

At the Breathing Space Institute, we do not make claims that we can’t document. At www.breathingspace.com, when you click on “meeting planners,” for example, you will see 100's of kudos letters, meeting fliers, long distance learning fliers, and other rosters help illuminate Jeff Davidson’s credentials.

Announcing Your Goals - Opening Keynote

An article in the month's Mens’ Health has confirmed the power of announcing your goals. Usain Bolt, the world record-holder in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, has a basic dream that "remains the same as it was when he won his first junior world title in the 200 meter at 15."

“Saying I wanted to be great, putting it in the minds of my countrymen as well as in my own mind, forced me to work to attain it,” Bolt says. “My career did not always go smoothly. Especially at first; I had many injuries. I might have settled for much less if I hadn’t had that big goal.”

Spread the Word - Opening Keynote

Never forget the value of a catchy name, advertising, and promotion. Pikes Peak is actually only the 25th highest mountain in the American Rockies, but it is the one that everyone refers to first.

What is Memorable to Audiences? - Opening Keynote

Epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are neurotransmittors, play a large role in converting short-term memories into long-term memory. They are released when you subject yourself to physical or emotional stress. Some scientists believe this is why you can remember massive details about a car wreck, or why you don’t need to write down the phone number of someone you find very attractive.

Hence, to lock in the memory of audience attendees, the speaker must do something dramatic.

Four Levels of Training - Opening Keynote

Donald Kirkpatrick's Four Level Evaluation Model training programs was published in 1959 in the Journal of American Society of Training Directors and is still highly valid today:

* Reaction - how the learners react to the learning process
* Learning - the extent to which the learners gain knowledge and skills
* Behavior - capability to perform the learned skills while on the job
* Results - includes such items as monetary, efficiency, moral, etc.

The Greatest Tribute - Opening Keynote

Gene Perret tells of the time he was addressing his daughter's elementary school and offering one of his humorous presentations. When finished, on the way out of the auditorium, he passed a little girl who looked very upset. He stopped and asked her why she was upset. She said that she wasn't. In a soft voice she said, "I thought you were so funny that I wet my pants." Gene considers this to be his greatest tribute.

Og Mandino Inspired Me - Opening Keynote

I'm lying on my bed during a rainy day in November, decades ago, in a rut. I've been unemployed for four months and I'm waiting to hear on several job opportunities but nothing has come through. I start reading The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino and immediately find the motivation to take a shower, get dressed, drive to the nearby consulting firm (which is my best prospect) call on the CEO and convince him that day that I should be hired. Two weeks later I got the job.
